Independent journalism - Knowledge sharing - Public learning

African history, state & society

Current African affairs and global developments affecting African people: how decisions about conflict, debt, resources, citizenship, work and knowledge distribute power and shape everyday life. Historical evidence explains the institutions, continuities and turning points behind those decisions.

Our editorial focus brings historical inquiry into conversation with politics, sociology and cultural research. Each publication identifies its case, sources and argument. Africa is approached through different societies and their connections, with attention to African scholarship and the people whose actions shape change.

A journal, a learning collection, a news desk

The Journal develops focused studies with a scholarly debate, method, empirical analysis and contribution. Public learning makes documented histories, concepts and research strategies accessible. Selected news reports current developments whose consequences matter to this focus.

Original research requires human editorial review. Source syntheses, opinion and original reporting have distinct labels; existing publications retain their records. Publication decisions follow relevance, evidence and ethics, rather than a daily volume target.

Research and contribution guidelines

Rights, agency & accountability

We examine how authority is exercised, how resources are distributed and how people negotiate, resist and reshape institutions. Indigenous authority, colonial rule, nationalism, development, structural adjustment and democratic politics are investigated through their specific contexts and mechanisms.

Gender, labour, culture and social experience are part of this inquiry. African sovereignty is examined alongside the rights and dignity of people, including those in the diaspora. Governments, businesses and international organisations are subject to the same evidential scrutiny.
